Who we are
Ethos Commons (“Ethos”) at ethoscommons.com is owned and operated by Asia Internship Program (the registered AIP company operating Ethos Commons), Bangkok, Thailand (“we”, “us”). You can reach us at daniele@internsinasia.com. A council of member universities oversees how Ethos is run.
What Ethos is
Ethos is a place where students review the organisations that hosted their placement (an internship, a volunteer placement, a research stay, or a placement inside a programme), and where universities receive what their students choose to send them. Companies can claim their page and reply in public. Ethos is a pilot. We may change, pause or stop parts of it.
Who can use it
- You must be at least 18 years old. Ethos collects information about safety, wellbeing and workplace treatment, and we do not accept that from minors. If you are under 18, please do not create an account or write anything here.
- You must use your own identity and your own email address.
- Students review only placements they did themselves, from the last 3 years. One review per person per company.
- Placement officers act for the university that employs them. Company representatives act for the company whose email domain they verified.
What you promise when you review
Every review is sent with a statement that it is truthful and from your own experience. By sending it you also promise that:
- you were really there, in the role and period you give;
- you describe what you saw and experienced, not what you heard from others;
- you do not name or describe any individual person in a way that identifies them;
- you do not include anything you are bound to keep confidential, such as trade secrets or client data;
- you were not paid, pressured or rewarded to write it, by anyone.
We check that you were there before your review counts, using your university's records or a placement agreement you upload. We can refuse, hide or remove a review that breaks these rules, and we can close the account of anyone who writes a fake review.
How reviews are shown
- A company page appears once at least one verified review exists. Before that, nothing is shown.
- Scores are averaged and shown as numbers. Comments are read by a moderator before they appear. Nobody edits your words.
- Your name is never shown. A comment carries a role and a period, which you may leave out.
- Reviews marked as involving harassment, exploitation, discrimination or safety are never published. They go privately to your university's placement office. The company page shows only a count, and only after the company has had 14 days to respond through the placement office.
- Where the law of a country makes public comment about a named company a criminal matter, the page shows numbers only.
Anonymity, and its limits
We do not show who wrote a review, and we do not tell companies. We do hold your identity, because verification depends on it. A court or a competent authority can order us to disclose it, and we will comply with a valid order. We will tell you when we are allowed to. Please write as if your name could one day be attached to what you wrote: honest, specific, about the work.
Companies
- A representative who verifies a company email address can reply publicly under any published comment, post one statement, and write the company's own description.
- Replies must be about the review, not about the reviewer. Attempts to identify or contact a reviewer through Ethos are not allowed.
- If you believe a comment is false, defamatory or identifies a person, use the takedown request. We acknowledge within 48 hours and decide as fast as we responsibly can. While we look, we may hide the comment.
- Nothing on Ethos is for sale to companies. You cannot pay to change, remove or promote a review.
Universities
A member university receives only what its own students route to it: serious concerns, and feedback about the organisations that placed them. It confirms placements from its records. It agrees to treat what it receives as confidential, to act on concerns in good faith, and to use the aggregate outcomes only for the support of its students.
A student with no member university is still heard. Ethos moderators act as their placement office of last resort: they acknowledge the concern, tell the company one exists, record the reply and decide. Ethos does not give legal advice, negotiate or represent anyone. Our where to turn page lists who can.
What you may not do
- Write about a placement you did not do, or write more than once about the same company.
- Scrape, copy or republish reviews or aggregates in bulk, or use them for advertising, ranking products, or any commercial purpose without our written agreement.
- Try to identify a reviewer, or use Ethos to harass anyone.
- Upload documents that are not yours, or that contain other people's personal data beyond what a placement agreement normally holds.
- Interfere with the service or try to get around its checks.
Our role and our limits
Reviews are the opinions and experiences of the people who wrote them, not ours. We verify that reviewers were there and we read comments before they appear, but we cannot guarantee that every statement is accurate. Aggregates are averages of what students reported. Ethos does not vet, endorse or rank companies, and a company page is not advice to accept or refuse a placement.
Ethos is provided as is. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for decisions made in reliance on it, or for content written by users. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
Your account
You can download your data and delete your account at any time from your profile. Deleting your account deletes your reviews, placements, pulses and documents. Averages are recomputed without you. We may suspend an account that breaks these terms.
Changes
When we change these terms in a way that matters, we ask you to agree again the next time you sign in. The version date is at the top of this page and every change is recorded in our public changelog.
Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of Thailand. If you are a consumer in a country whose law gives you rights that cannot be taken away, you keep those rights. Before going to court, please write to us. Most disagreements can be fixed by a conversation.
